This is a very visual book. Broken up into State chapters, it features all the major volcanic regions of Australia.

Although there are no active volcanoes in Australia, many of the landmarks are familiar to Australians: for example Mt Warning and the Glasshouse Mountains in NSW, Lake Gambier in South Australia, the giant dolerite sills of Tasmania's Cradle Mountain and Cape Rouel and the Undara Lava Tubes in outback Queensland. Also featured is Heard Island, an Australian Territory in the sub-Antarctic, which bears at its centre an active volcano. Every volcanic region is accompanied by a map and at least one colour photograph, often more. The features of the region can be clearly seen on the map and the precise location is given so people can visit the area and see the remnants of Australia's explosive past. None of these places (with the exception of sub-Antarctica) are inaccessible, so it is possible to stroll, crawl or climb around these locations and learn more of Australia's history. Simple diagrams are provided to explain how certain bodies of fluid or solid rock have intruded and displaced other rocks, so that it is possible to make sense of today's landscape.

About the Author

Russell Ferrett

Russ Ferrett is an avid traveller. He visited and explored every site featured in his book Great Cities of the World and he or a member of his family took all but one of its photographs. His travels, along with 40 years of teaching geography and history to children, makes him eminently suitable to write a book of this breadth. Russell has also written When The Earth Moves: Earthquakes and Volcanoes in this Young Reed series for young children, as well as Australia's Volcanoes.
