This book chronicles the 91 years in which Ford built cars in Australia for Australian conditions and interviews many of the people who worked for the company. It constitutes the complete history of Ford production in this country, with many rare images and essential production statistics. The perfect book for every Ford enthusiast, or anyone with an affinity for cars or industrial Australia. On March 31, 1925, US manufacturer Ford announced that Geelong would be the Australian headquarters of its local production. The first Australian-built Ford was a Model T that came off an improvised production line in a disused Geelong woolstore in June 1925, while work started on a factory in the nearby suburb of Norlane. In 1928 the factory switched to the Model A and was followed by the Ford V8 in 1932. In 1956 the company bought a large tract of land in the northern Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows, and in July 1961 announced that the new Melbourne factory would become the company headquarters. On the 23 May 2013, Ford announced that its factories in Geelong and Broadmeadows would be closed down in October 2016.

There are so many people who have perished in the Australian bush, from the early explorers to the present, who might have survived had they had the necessary survival skills. Australian Bushcraft explains how to make use of natural materials for both survival and pleasure. It describes many of the skills used by primitive man, and adds to these skills necessary for survival today. Australian Bushcraft is as relevant today as it was when it was first published, for those who, by choice or misadventure find themselves thrown on their resources for survival in Australia’ vast wilderness areas.

Australians are known for their informality and laid- back nature and this is reflected in the liberal use of colourful and amusing slang. 'The True Blue Guide to Australian Slang' is an A-Z journey through the words, expressions and cultural idiosyncrasies that make Australians so unique. Humorous yet comprehensive and up-to-date, the book covers everything from curses and rhyming slang to insults, sexual innuendo and euphemisms. It features classic Aussie bush slang as well as more contemporary expressions that are commonly used in the city. 'The True Blue Guide to Australian Slang' gives us all a new understanding and appreciation of the irreverent wit that is such a feature of the Australian language and will be indispensable for both locals and visitors.

One of Australiarsquo;s most enduring and strangest mysteries, Swamp is a story of greed, deceit, the abuse of trustmdash;and murder. International journalist and acclaimed writer Richard Shears uncovers new evidence in the case of the mysterious disappearance of Margaret Clementmdash;the lsquo;Lady of the Swamp.rsquo; Rich, beautiful and well-educated, Margaret Clement was the belle of Melbourne society. With a legacy from her wealthy father, she and her sisters set up a mansion called Tullaree in the verdant pastures near the Tarwin River. With staff to run the property, they impressed the cream of Edwardian society with Japanese screens, tapestries and furniture from their trips abroad. Hit hard by the Great Depression and World War I, their finances declined and the ditches that kept the Tarwin River back collapsed through neglect. The lush paddocks sank under a vast swamp as the elderly belles clung to their beloved Tullaree. As the swamp rose, so too did the presence of opportunists, scammers, lawyersmdash;and a killer.

This is the 50,000-year story of the Australian Aboriginal rock art of Arnhem Land. Aboriginal rock art, as practised in Arnhem Land, is the world's longest continuing art tradition. It is a tradition that is not merely decorative, but provides a "journey in time" - a pictorial record of the longest surviving culture on earth. Occurring at thousands of different sites, and of many different styles, the rock paintings of this region date from at least 30,000 years ago, and some may have been in place as early as 50,000 years ago. The oldest galleries pre-date the Hall of Bulls and Lascaux in France. This book explores the depth and complexity of this art tradition and gives insight into the aesthetic and cultural worlds of the people who created it. 'Journey in Time' has been written and illustrated with the permission of the Gagudju people, the traditional owners of the land.

This 55th anniversary edition of the Colin Thiele classic is being released to coincide with a new major movie remake of Storm Boy starring Jai Courtney and Geoffrey Rush. Storm Boy is the timeless story of Mike "Storm Boy" Kingley who rescues three pelican chicks after their mother is shot. One of the birds, Mr Percival, forms a very special bond with the boy which brings into focus the conflict between his lifestyle in the remote Coorong of South Australia and the external pressures of society including his schooling. Treasured by generations of children, this is a heartwarming- tale about unusual friendship and unconditional love.

For perhaps fifty thousand years the Aboriginal people have lived, and lived well, in Australia. They have developed a unique knowledge of native plants and a deep understanding of the value of many animal products. Bush Food is an exploration of these traditional skills and a compendium of the kinds of foods eaten by Aborigines. It indicates how food is caught or gathered, hunted or picked, how it is prepared and cooked, and what nutritional value it has. It considers, too, the use of natural products in traditional Aboriginal herbal medicine.

Starting Out With Natives will help you discover what fun and how easy it is to grow natives.Growing native plants is easy. Whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned gardener, Starting Out With Natives will help you to choose species to suit your area and your garden. Plants are grouped alphabetically by common name, and the species described are generally available either in your local nursery or at specialist native nurseries. The plants featured in this book have been selected for different zones around Australia. These are shown on a map in the introduction, colour-coded to correspond with zones given in the species entries, so you can see at a glance whether a plant will grow well in your area.

This book covers more than 400 species, representing some 80 different genera.Ivan Holliday's A Field Guide to Australian Trees has been reprinted numerous times and become a classic guide. This 3rd revised edition includes four additional species, and both the text and pictures of many other entries have been updated. This book covers more than 400 species, representing some 80 different genera. Better known groups like the acacias and eucalypts are well represented, but a special effort has been made to include a large number of species from Australia's diverse rainforests.

Updated edition of this illustrated guide to identification.Australia's bush and cities alike are dominated by eucalypts, in habitats as diverse as desert dunes and snowy mountain tops. Eucalyptus? uses are varied: from commercial harvesting for essential oil, timber or fibre, to species with spectacular flowers that are prized by gardeners as ornamental trees. Many of these species may superficially look alike. It is not possible to identify eucalypts from their leaves alone, but with a few simple aids to identification most can be tracked down. This easy-to-use book guides the reader through the key features: type of bark, appearance of buds, flowers and fruit ? the gumnuts ? and arrangement of bud clusters that will lead to the correct species name.

This new title in New Holland’s award-winning Green Guides series investigates the ever-popular subject of Australia’s seashells and other marine molluscs, including squid, cuttlefish, octopus and ridiculously colourful nudibranchs. The structure of this book is similar to that of other titles in the series. Fact panels cover interesting aspects of the subject, including what these critters eat, where they live, how they reproduce, and why certain species pack a very poisonous punch, with some of the strongest toxins known in the animal kingdom. Meanwhile, identification spreads cover all the key species and families which occur around Australia, including the likes of cowries, cone shells, murex shells, giant cuttlefish, pyjama squid and blue-ringed octopus. The many beautiful images are taken from the author’s own collection, which has been built up over many decades, making it an entertaining and enlightening read for everyone.

A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia has been the most comprehensive field guide available on the subject since the first edition was published in 2003. As new species are discovered, known ranges extended and higher quality images become available, updated editions of the book have been written to reflect these changes. This new edition adds 92 reptile species, mostly comprising new descriptions since the publication of the fifth edition, plus 10 species that come with the inclusion of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. This sixth edition of the book includes images, descriptions and maps for all 1,109 species of Australian reptiles described up until the end of June 2020. Some of these are pictured in life for the first time, and many are represented by several images to depict geographical and sexual differences. The book features easy-to-use diagnostic illustrations to explain anatomical features, a comprehensive glossary, and the more significant reptile habitats are pictured. Each species has a clear and concise text description to aid identification, with diagnostic differences from confusion species given in bold font. Each species has a distribution map and image(s) on the facing page. For ease of use there are indexes to scientific and common names. Designed as a field guide, with a sturdy plastic cover and compact layout, the target readership for this book is anyone with an interest in reptiles, whether scientists or amateurs. It is regarded as the standard reference guide for professionals working in the field and is also popular with general naturalists.

In this new fully updated edition, 'A Field Guide to Reptiles of New South Wales' you will find every gecko, flap-footed lizard, goanna, dragon, skink, snake and turtle known to live throughout the state’s many habitats. The guide narrows down the field of species identification to a manageable size for any naturalist. The telltale details that make identification possible lie in the descriptions of families, genera and species; these are accompanied by clear line drawings. Where you need to tune out similar species, simple keys are provided. For herpetologists, the location maps will prove invaluable. This book is a thorough update, expansion and revision of 'A Field Guide to the Snakes and Lizards of New South Wales' published in 2004. Since then, the number of species has increased, countless names have changed and new species locations have been found.

'A Field Guide to Reptiles of Queensland' covers all of Queensland’s 440 named species, including 135 that occur nowhere else. Colour photographs make for quick identification, aided by line drawings, keys, distribution maps and descriptions. Queensland is home to an extraordinary diversity of reptiles. This is because it has so many different types of habitat. In the tropical rainforest lives one of Australia s most spectacular dragons, the Boyd's Rainforest Dragon. The arid south-west is home to the deadly Inland Taipan. In the deeply cracked black soil plains of the Mitchell Grass Downs, Collett's Snake hides from the baking midday sun. In the far north there are even isolated pockets of New Guinean animals, among them the magnificent Green Tree Python, which lives in the Iron and McIlraith ranges and can be found by day coiled around thick vines. And few Queensland homes are without delightful nocturnal geckos.

Now in its sixth edition, the phenomenally successful 'A Guide to Flowers and Plants of Tasmania' has been in print since 1981. This beautifully illustrated guide has been extensively revised, with an additional 30 species, updated text and many new pictures, some of which are full page, adding even more vibrancy and interest to the book. It is an invaluable companion and reference for bushwalkers, tourists and all those interested in the Tasmanian countryside. For ease of identification, each of the 300 species described is illustrated by one or more photographs. The text includes all the information necessary to help identify the plants: size, description, flowering time, appearance of the flowers and other parts of the plant, and the type of habitat where you may expect to find them. The book also includes an introduction to the vegetation of Tasmania, diagrams of leaf shapes and the parts of a flower, and a glossary of common terms.
